2014 ‘Chloe’ Chardonnay

Our ‘Chloe’ is produced from a 0.8 hectare plot located at the north-east corner of the Woodlands Vineyard. The plot lies at the top of a south facing slope where the soil is composed of deep loam topsoil over clay. This plot is the most shaded location on our vineyard- protected on the west, north and east.

The 2014 growing season was characterized by a wet spring, windy flowering, and a moderate dry summer. August and September were particularly wet, with September seeing many storms through south-west WA. Rains received late in November led to a well saturated water table, which retained moisture until the end of December. From December onwards  there were virtually no rain events until harvest.

This wine was picked on the 25th of February. After harvest half of the fruit was destemmed and pressed to tank for debourbage, while the other half was whole bunch pressed to barrel. Pressing fruit as whole bunches is a very slow process, but one we feel is worthwhile as it adds refinement to the resulting wine.

Fermentation proceeded well, with 55% of the wine fermenting without the addition of yeast. Following fermentation the wine remained in barrel with the lees stirred once a month. This wine was bottled in January 2015 after 11 months in barrel. Forty percent of the barrels used on our 2015 Chloe were new.

The colour of this wine is a bright intense gold. Still a touch closed, the nose is dense and brooding – with French oak notes combining with honey and floral characters. The palate shows the classic Chardonnay characters of nectarine and white peach combined with more tropical flavours of apricot and mango. Very deep, powerful, and pristine, this wine has a long life ahead of it.

This wine will be best enjoyed from 2021 to 2025
