2009 Cabernet Sauvignon ‘Alma May’

Each year our Cabernet Sauvignon is named after a family member or family friend. Our 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is named “Alma May” after founder David Watson’s mother.

Our Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from the original Woodlands plantings on our south-facing slope. These four small plots receive the greatest number of sunlight hours at Woodlands, but the east-west orientation of the vines ensures a slow fruit maturation. These plots are almost always picked last.

2009 was another classic vintage in Margaret River. From November a wave of hot weather moved across the region, aided by cool southerly winds that kept temperatures down at night. From December onwards there was consistent warm weather– all our 2009 wines are perfectly ripe at 13.5% alcohol.

This wine is a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc that has matured in new French oak for 21 months.

Deep, intense crimson in colour, the nose of this wine shows layers of brooding dark berry fruits combined with white spice and tight grained French oak. The palate combines a core of sweet dark berry fruits with cedar and pepper to form a ripe but complex blend. Rich and powerful, the wine finishes with silky tannins and fine natural acidity.

This is one of our greatest wines. This wine will be best enjoyed from 2019 to 2035.
