2008 ‘Margaret’ Cabernet Merlot Malbec

This wine is a blend 0f 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and 11% Malbec.

Each year our “Margaret” is primarily sourced from a single slope that wraps around a hill on the south of Woodlands Vineyard, planted entirely with Cabernet Sauvignon. This hill wraps around a 90 degree radius-facing east, north east and north. As the rows run north-south, the fruit on this slope receives a great deal of direct sunlight in the morning to mid-afternoon, at which time the angle of the slope creates its own shade from the late-afternoon light. Wines from this slope tend to ripen earlier, and have more up-front fruit characters than other wines from Woodlands.

The Merlot and Malbec plots that make up the remainder of the “Margaret” come from a west-facing slope of deep loam soil. This slope receives the most direct afternoon sunlight at Woodlands, and produces more exotic fruit characters in the finished wine.

2008 was a hot dry vintage in Margaret River. Despite conditions being dry, the high clay content of the “Margaret” plots ensured that the crop levels remained somewhat normal at around 2 tonnes per acre. The warm conditions from January to April led to excellent even ripening of the fruit, and produced wines with higher tannin levels than usual.

The fruit for this wine was hand picked in mid-March before being sorted, destemmed and crushed into small closed fermenters. Ferments proceeded quickly, with the fermenting must being pumped over 4 times a day. Following fermentation the Cabernet Sauvignon portions for our “Margaret” spent 45 days on skins. We believe this practice has added more viscosity and tannin integration to the finished wine. Once the wine completed malolactic fermentation it was transferred into French oak, of which over 70% was new. This wine remained in oak for 18 months.

Our 2008 “Margaret” is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and 11% Malbec. The colour is an intense crimson. The nose shows perfumed characters of violet, blackberry, red berry fruits and toasty French oak. The palate is muscular and powerful, with a core of ripe red-berry fruits combining with lashings of ripe tannin. The finish is bright and intense.

This wine will be best enjoyed from 2014 to 2020.
