This wine is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 12% Malbec.
2006 was a very cool year in Western Australia. Most varieties were picked 4 weeks later than their long term average and crops were down significantly.
Due to extensive leaf plucking and bunch thinning, all Woodlands fruit had excellent exposure to sunlight. Due to the ongoing cool conditions, fruit stayed on the vine for record lengths enabling full ripeness and great complexity.
Our 2006 ‘Margaret’ was hand picked in late April. The blend comprises the best barrels of our Merlot and Malbec, the best Cabernet Sauvignon parcel from our north-east facing planting, and Cabernet Sauvignon from our original south facing block.
After harvest, the Merlot and Malbec portions were crushed into small open fermentors. The Cabernet Sauvignon portion of this wine was crushed into small closed fermentors. The wine was fermented at temperatures ranging from 23 to 26 degrees Celsius, and was pumped over four times a day. Following primary fermentation, the wine was racked into barrel where it underwent malolactic fermentation (“malo”).
Our 2006 ‘Margaret’ remained in oak for a total of 20 months, of which 40% was new and 60% was one year old.
Deep crimson colour. Rich lifted perfumed nose, with a toasty tobacco leaf character combining with char, vanilla, mint and earth. Showing richness and weight in a claret style. Stylish finish.
This wine has sold out.
