It made for a challenging assignment when I had to choose just one wine to be my wine of the year in my annual West Australian Wine Guide 2020. In the end I came down with the Woodlands, which I have to say has claims to be finest yet in this distinguished line of great wines. The Woodlands was also judged best red wine and best Cabernet Sauvignon, a mighty feast.

2018 Wilyabrup Valley Chardonnay – 91 Points

“Impressive young chardonnay. Bouquet of stone fruit and light toast with a subtle lees influence. The palate is light-bodied, but with a complexity and presentation expected at higher price points. A little brioche and lemon curd add further to the overall feel of the wine.” – Ray Jordan

2018 Woodlands Brook Chardonnay – 95 Points

“Creamy rich and highly textured Chardonnay displaying such tremendous depth and fruit concentration. Aromas merge lemon curd and nectarine with a cashew and fruit mix. The palate has been built with texture and mouth feel that is appealing. The opulence and fruit intensity of this vintage is quite evident. A subtle, savoury finish balances everything.” – Ray Jordan

2016 ‘Margaret’ Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot – 97 Points

“Gorgeous blend of two-thirds Cabernet with roughly equal Malbec and Merlot. Beautiful purity on the nose with highly scented notes of violet and floral red berry with a leafy, graphite character. There’s tremendous fruit power and intensity on the palate, but it’s been harnessed and integrated into such a seamless, velvety texture. Rolls effortlessly to a long finish.” – Ray Jordan

2016 ‘Clémentine Eloise’ Cabernet Sauvignon – 99 Points

“One of the most beautifully elegant of these super premium Woodlands Cabernets. This was a vintage known for the heft of its tannins, harnessed to be part of an elegant wine of blissful refinement. Perfumed notes of black fruit and violets. The palate is so beautifully woven with effortless power and length.” – Ray Jordan[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
